May 20, 2014 5:00 PM to 7:00 PMThe human body is a complex system whose function depends on the delicate balance of many underlying systems. When the body becomes diseased, this balance is lost and the system is compromised. Doctors have devoted their lives to providing effective treatments for these diseases, but their success is tempered by their inability to predict consistent behavior within the body or to identify the relative importance of each component system. By developing theoretical models of physiological systems, mathematicians are unraveling the mysteries of complex bodily systems and are using this information to guide experimental design and treatments. Dr. Arciero will discuss the mathematical models she has developed to better understand diseases such as glaucoma, peripheral arterial disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, diabetes, and transplant rejection.
